Geraint Edwards and Dewi Williams' collaborative and interactive art work, ART/SWITCH makes reference to the nature of ‘will’ as in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s The Social Contract, 1762. ART/SWITCH exists both physically and online where you can remotely determine its status. This work is not an opinion poll. It is a democratisation of the art-making process, where each unilateral decision designates the real-time status of the object. ‘General will’ is defined by Rousseau as the course of action which is in the best interests of the population at large, even if it contradicts the particular will of the individual. ART/SWITCH provides the people with a choice to decide on an individual basis whether the act of choosing is itself art and influencing the binary decision.
